Foarby Nij Altoenae | Rob Severein | Book design | 2019

The first design of my book about a unique region in the Netherlands. The land 'beyond Nij Altoenae’. Land of farmers, freebooters and adventurers. From old communists, workers, anarchists, artists and other 'washed ashore people'. Outsiders with their feet firmly in the clay. 'Dikers and villagers' who prefer to be left alone.

A place that does not want to please. That is what it is. Uncompromising and barren. Empty and deserted.

A land that doesn't want anything from you. That you don't have to share. Of living and letting live. Where you are who you are.

Here, in the far north of Friesland, on the last dike before the Wadden Sea, the first signs of Alzheimer's appeared to my grandmother.

Foarby Nij Altoenae (the elsewhere world) combines landscapes, portraits and still lifes in a series of photographs about the people who live there. On the dikes, in the country. About their connection with the area. About the appeal and the unique character of this region.

About the illness of my grandmother. The beckoning distance, in which she slowly disappeared. And the answer to the question "Where do I belong in all this?

The book will be published in 2019/2020.

Stephane Mallarme said that everything in the world exists in order to end up in a book. Today everything exists to end in a photograph.
